Abstract : A powerful epic about a man of the sword and a man of the cloth who unite to shield a South American Indian tribe from brutal subjugation by 18th century colonial empires.
A river flowing through a dense rain forest bears in its turbulence a martyred Jesuit priest bound to a rough-hewn cross. The dreadful crucifix tumbles through rock-strewn rapids, until, in a moment thick with terror and hypnotic beauty, it plunges 200 feet down the roaring swirl of a waterfall.

A Man of the Sword and a Man of the Cloth: A Slave Trader and A Missionary

That astonishing scene opens The Mission, a powerful epic about a man of the sword (Robert De Niro) and a man of the cloth (Jeremy Irons) who unite to shield a South American Indian tribe from brutal subjugation by 18th-century colonial empires. Sweeping, lyrical, visually resplendent, The Mission triumphs on two levels: intellectually as a clash between faith and greed, and emotionally as an action-filled clash of wills and cultures.

The Mission brings together many of the talents of The Killing Fields, including co-producer David Putnam, director Roland Joffé and cinematographer Chris Menges. Their artistry, combined with impassioned acting, writing and music, makes The Mission one of film history's most haunting spectacles.

Winner of the 1986 Cannes Film Festival's Best Picture Award, The Mission earned seven Academy Award® nominations (including Best Picture) and won an Oscar® for best Cinematography. And, like all great films, it delivers its own rewards to the viewer. It is epic, unforgettable storytelling at its finest.
